Do Americans need visas to come to the UK?

Generally, US citizens can travel to the UK without a visa and stay for up to 6 months if they are coming for tourism. Nevertheless, it would be preferable to apply for a visa if you have previously been refused entry into the UK or have a criminal record. Additionally, if you wish to come to the UK either to study (for longer than 6 months), work, join your partner or family for a long stay or to get married or enter a civil partnership then you will need a visa.

Can a US citizen get married or enter into a civil partnership on Tourist Visa in the UK?

A US citizen cannot get married or enter into a civil partnership on Tourist or Standard Visit Visa in the UK. They will need to apply instead for a Marriage Visitor or Fiancé / Fiancée visa.

Can an American work on a Visitor Visa in the UK?

A US citizen cannot work on a Visitor Visa in the UK, including remote working. However, if a US citizen is invited as an expert in the UK then they will be able to stay for up to 1 month without a visa and can be paid to do specific things. What documents are required for a UK visa?

The documents that are required for a UK visa depend on the type of visa that you are seeking to apply for.

How early can I apply for a UK visa?

If you are applying from outside the UK, then the earliest you can apply is 3 months before you travel. If you are applying in the UK, then you can apply at any time before your visa expires.

How much is a UK visa?

The cost of the Home Office fees for a UK visa depends on the type of visa, your circumstances, where you are and how you apply. You will also need to pay the healthcare surcharge as part of your application (unless you are applying to remain permanently in the UK). You can check how much you need to pay on the Home Office official website.
